McLaren has secured a front-row lockout for the Spanish Grand Prix, while Verstappen and Russell are behind and will be waiting to pounce at every opportunity they can find. Even so, it is Piastri who will have the pole position advantage going into the race tomorrow. Read below for a full qualifying report!
Q1 Report:
Piastri started Q1 by setting a quick lap time that no one was able to challenge for the rest of the first qualifying session. Max Verstappen set the second quickest time with Norris behind. Both Mercedes were looking to be back it top form after a disappointing weekend in Monaco, and they’ve set the fourth and fifth fastest times. Lance Stroll pulled together a lap to go seventh fastest, while his teammate Alonso, who hasn’t scored a point all season, was down in fourteenth. Both Racing Bulls were also able to make it through to Q2, however many other teams can’t say the same. One of those is Alpine, who’s Franco Colapinto had a mechanical issue and unfortunately couldn’t get out for a second lap. Williams also suffered a Q1 exit in Carlos Sainz.
The drivers eliminated are Nico Hulkenberg, Esteban Ocon, Carlos Sainz, Franco Colapinto, and Yuki Tsunoda, after the second Red Bull driver has once again failed to reach Max Verstappen’s times.
Q2 Report:
McLaren are still looking to be the strongest team this weekend, with Piastri going quickest with Norris behind. Max Verstappen managed to put his Red Bull in third, with George Russell fourth fastest. Both Ferraris have made it through to Q3, as had Isack Hadjar, Fernando Alonso, Kimi Antonelli, and Pierre Gasly. The Racing Bulls of Isack Hadjar has been looking fast all through qualifying, while Antonelli will be hoping for a better result in Q3 than the one he’s got in Q2, down in ninth.
The drivers eliminated are Alex Albon, Gabriel Bortoelto, Liam Lawson, Lance Stroll, and Ollive Bearman
Q3 Report:
Oscar Piastri has delivered all weekend long, and continued to deliver in Q3 to take pole ahead of the Grand Prix in Barcelona. Lando Norris was a close contender, as the second McLaren driver put his car on provisional pole after their first time out on track in Q3, however it was Piastri who managed to beat the time on their second run and go quickest over all. The battle behind was also ramping up, with Verstappen and Russell on the second row after tight competition between the Mercedes, Ferrari, and the Red Bull of Max Verstappen.
Hamilton went fifth fastest, with Kimi Antonelli behind in sixth, and the second Ferrari lining up seventh on the grid. Pierre Gasly drove to P8, while Hadjar was behind and Fernando Alonso will be starting tenth and hoping for his first points of the season.
