Mclaren had their eyes on Piastri as the young Aussie made an impressive climb to F1, winning the Formula Renault title, then the Formula 3 title the year after, and, completing the impressive series of consecutive title wins, securing first place by a considerable margin in Formula 2. It was no wonder that two teams, both Alpine and Mclaren, were jumping at the chance to have Oscar drive for them. In the end, as you might know, Mclaren won out and the impressive driver debuted for them in 2023 next to Lando Norris. The Aussie had a fair shot at winning the championship in 2025, however he ended the season in third, behind Verstappen and his teammate Norris.
