Norris Surges to Dominate Miami Sprint Win Ahead of Piastri and Leclerc

Lando Norris took a dominant victory in the Miami Sprint, leading teammate Oscar Piastri home in a McLaren one-two, with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc rounding out the podium in third. It was a significant statement from McLaren after a difficult start to the season. Here are five of the key talking points from the Sprint.

1. Norris Controlling from the Front

After grabbing pole in Sprint Qualifying, Norris made no mistakes when the lights went out. The reigning World Champion converted his front row start into a race lead and was never seriously threatened, building a gap of nearly four seconds over Piastri by the time the checkered flag fell. It was the first win of the 2026 season for both Norris and McLaren, and the first time a non-Mercedes driver had won a Sprint or Grand Prix all year, which is a real statement of intent from the Woking outfit.

2. Antonelli’s Penalty Costs Him Dearly

Kimi Antonelli got off to another rough start, dropping from second to fourth on the opening lap as both Leclerc and Piastri swept past a Mercedes that once again struggled to get off the line cleanly. He also made contact with Isack Hadjar early in the race. What really hurt him, though, was a five-second post-race penalty for repeatedly exceeding track limits, which dropped him from fourth on the road all the way to sixth in the final standings, and behind Russell and Verstappen. It was a race to forget for the championship leader.

3. Verstappen and Hamilton’s Battle

One of the more entertaining sub-plots of the race was the battle between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton, who went wheel-to-wheel on multiple occasions, including a notable exchange on lap 8. Verstappen came out on top, finishing fifth after Antonelli’s penalty bumped him up a place. Hamilton, meanwhile, faded as the race went on after an entertaining, but ultimately costly, early scrap, crossing the line seventh. Neither driver really got the result they were looking for, but Verstappen at least had the satisfaction of winning their personal duel.

4. Gasly and Alpine Picking Up a Point

Further down the field, it was a positive Sprint for Pierre Gasly and Alpine. The Frenchman picked up the final championship point on offer in eighth place, having moved past teammate Franco Colapinto on the opening lap and held his ground throughout. It won’t set the world alight, but in a season where Alpine have often been looking up at the midfield from below, a Sprint point is a welcome result and a sign of some genuine pace returning to the car.

5. A Difficult Day for Audi

It was a Sprint to forget entirely for Audi. Nico Hulkenberg suffered a dramatic power unit failure on his reconnaissance lap, his car catching fire before he even reached the grid, forcing him to miss the race entirely. His teammate Gabriel Bortoleto did make it to the finish, but was subsequently disqualified for an engine technical infringement, wiping out any points the team might have salvaged. A brutal double blow for a team still finding its feet in Formula 1.
